Our company, Welded Sheet Metal Specialty Company began in 1948. My uncle John always dreamed of having his own business. At the age of 13, John went to Cleveland to apprentice in sheet metal and welding. During the 1930’s, he worked for major airplane manufacturers such as Curtis-Wright and Glen-Martin. In 1948, John was working in Pittsburgh for Limbaugh, a steel fab shop. There he met Pete Kecks, his future partner. Their skills and experience complimented the other. Welded Sheet Metal began May 18, 1948 in three garages in an alley on Pittsburgh’s North Side. They fabricated HVAC Ductwork and other light sheet metal parts.They didn’t have much equipment, so a good friend with a shop close by let John and Pete use his
equipment at night.
In 1956, my father, Frank Mehalov joined the company. He was to handle all of the administrative duties, Uncle John and Pete ran the shop. In 1956, Welded Sheet Metal moved to our present location in the Sheridan area of Pittsburgh, PA. Since then, we have continued to grow and diversify by adding the latest technology in machines.
From a simple metal box to manufacturing parts for light rail transit vehicles to the research and development of robotic components, we’ve been called on to fabricate what was needed. We are proud to have successfully supplied parts for numerous monumental events which include the first atomic submarine (Nautilus), life support backpacks used on the Apollo Moon missions and components on robotic systems for interplanetary exploration. We also supplied parts for the Hubble Space Telescope and have shared in producing computer communications keyboards, built to aid the severely handicapped.
Today, Welded Sheet Metal Specialty Company continues to help our customers putform to their ideas by designing and fabricating Sheet Metal products to their specifications. From our humble beginnings over sixty years ago, we have learned, grown and diversified. We believe we are positioned for the opportunities and challenges yet to come.
